The college is established on 25th July, 1964, with the sole objective of bringing quality and higher education on the door steps of the economically backward agricultural belt of Jhanji in the district of Sivsagar, Assam. Initially it was known as "Jhanji College" and in 1969 re-christened as "Jhanji Hem Nath Sarma College" in dedication to the memory of Late Hem Nath Sarma, a leading educationist and a pioneering figure of the area. The college is affiliated to the Dibrugarh University in 1965 and enlisted under regulation 2(F) of UGC grant system. It was brought under the grant-in-aid system of the Govt. of Assam in 1975. It was provincialised by the Govt. of Assam in the year 2005.
Maintenance of discipline in all spheres of activity has been the primary objective of the college since its inception. Holding of regular classes throughout the academic session is one important aspect in this regard.
To achieve academic excellence in the students emphasis has been laid in holding of tutorial classes, workshop and seminars both general and departmental, field study etc. Maintenance of desired standard in all external examinations (both Higher Secondary and Degree) is another important aspect.
Since inception, graduates from this college have successfully completed various competitive examinations like Assam Civil Service and have been holding different responsible posts under the Govt. of Assam.
Sri Shyamkanu Mahanta, a graduate from this college of the 1999 batch has brought laurel to the institution by getting selected for the Indian Administrative Service holding 252nd position in the merit list in 2004.
Of the 35 (thirty five) National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited colleges in Assam (as on Feb, 2004) the J.H.N.S. College feels proud of being the first among the rural colleges in the district of Sivsagar. To ensure improvement of quality in education, the college has been tring its utmost to implement the suggestions of the NAAC during the current years.
Observing World Environment Day :
The College has organized a meeting on 5th June 2009, on the occasion Sri Akhil Gogoi member of Baichitra Dharitri an NGO on environment delivered a lecture on environment and he administered an Oath to the students and staff to preserve environment. |
